Album Review – Uwe Felchle Project – Green Funk
Uwe Felchle dishes up a heaping helping of greasy funk on his debut solo project “Green Funk”. Felchle’s name may not be one you are familiar with, but this Austrian bassists has been paying his dues for years, playing his first gig at age 6. Playing most of the instruments as well as providing vocals on the album Felchle proves that he is truly a multi-instrumentalist with a fresh approach to writing and a keen sense of arrangement. His deep, fat, funky tone propels the album with tasteful grooves and singing melodies.
It is hard to listen to any of the 14 tracks without wanting to get up and dance. “Bob Do Neva Stop” has a catchy groove that will stick with you all day long, while Felchle’s melodic lines in “Can You Feel the Funk” and “Dean’s Gone” provide a perfect harmony for his vocals. Demonstrating a mastery of his instrument, “The Rockstar Song” seemingly pays homage to Les Claypool, while “West Side Hotel Blues” is more of a nod to Marcus Miller.
I’ll admit it took me a couple of listens to truly get into this album, but once I did, it is hard to stop listening to. Felchle does a superb job exploring jazz, fusion, and funk stylings all the while maintaining a distinctively funky stream of consciousness. 8/10
