Album Review – Simon Sammut – BaSSic Attitude

Celebrated Maltese bassist Simon Sammut demonstrates his multifaceted 6 string stylings on his latest release BaSSic Attitude.  Collaborating with multi- instrumentalist Alexander Kuzmin, the duo have created a finely polished jewel of bass goodness.  The albums 8 instrumental tracks traverse Jazz, Soul, Funk & Pop, including the slow grooving ballad, “Recollection”, the Latin flavored “Dos Hijas”, the funky “Another Song”, and the feel good “Second Avenue”, all superbly arranged by Kuzmin.

Sammut’s melodic playing clearly takes center stage here.  His crisp, clear tone is an audible delight that distinctly drives the album forward with his flawless technique.  Sammut somehow manages to show off his melodic side and technical chops all without sounding like he is overplaying.

Having full command over his 6 String Yamaha TRB JPII, Sammut clearly demonstrates what is to be gained by playing in the extended range.  Sure to appeal to a large variety of tastes, this feel good jazz album is definitely worth checking out.  8/10.
